• Loved it!!
• I don't have much in common with Stassi. I don't care about musicals or serial killers or astrology. I'm meh about ranch dressing and fully-charged cell phones. I'm an introverted book nerd who would rather get punched in the face than blast my personal life onto the screens of millions of people.
  
  And yet, holy smokes, I loved this book. I watch Vanderpump religiously. Like, religiously. I'm not proud of that (but I guess that can be my basic b**ch confession for the day?). I just love everyone on the show--especially the Toms ;)--and this book has a very similar vibe.
  
  Stassi is honest and unapologetically herself. She confesses some pretty embarrassing facts like how she awkwardly lost her virginity, how she experimented with a lot of, ahem, unflattering fashion stages, or how she is DEEPLY fascinated with serial killers. (Btw, I have definitely walked past a serial killer more than 36 times. The guy who sat behind me in class was absent one day and the next day we saw he walked into a university up north and murdered five people before killing himself. Creepy AF...)
  
  What I love most about the book, though, is how uplifting it is. Stassi expresses a surprising amount of support for other women. I love her thoughts on relationships, sex, even hookups--how she says women are active participants in romantic relationships, not just there to passively be chased until they "give it up." It's actually pretty empowering. And her chapter on female friendships also surprised me by being really insightful. Honestly, I just wasn't expecting her to be as balanced and gracious in her relationships as she is in this book. I'm impressed.
  
  In short, I loved Next Level Basic. It's a quick read and super entertaining. Five stars all the way.
• Great book! Really gets you thinking about how you need to embrace yourself and be true to yourself. Don’t be ashamed of what you love, find someone who can love you for you!
• I am still thrown off by the fact that Stassi Schroeder wrote a book. And when I say she wrote a book, SHE WROTE A BOOK! Not a ghostwriter. Stassi, in all her glory. AND she narrated the audio. I had pre-ordered the hardback, but when I saw she was the narrator, I downloaded the audio. I don't think I would have fully appreciated this book without listening to Stassi read it to me.
  
  I want to say first that you most likely won't fully appreciate this book without knowing who Stassi is. So my advice, go binge watch Vanderpump Rules on Bravo. You need to be in the know with just who Stassi is to fully take in this book.
  
  If you are expecting some life-changing, literary piece of work with this book, then you still don't know who Stassi is. That isn't a slam on Stassi, that's just the truth. I really don't know what I was expecting with this book, but I can tell you, I didn't expect some of it.
  
  Believe it or not, Stassi gives us a deep message in this book. Even with her ridiculousness, silly stories, and obsession with ranch dressing, she has an important message.
  
  I loved this book so much because she didn't spout a bunch of cliche' and overused quotes or ideas. She was real, open, and just herself in telling her message. It's not just about all of the basic things she loves. It's about embracing things YOU love. And she puts everything in such a realistic, unfluffed, uncliche'd way, I couldn't stop listening.
  
  If you want to laugh and enjoy someone being absolutely real with you, then I encourage you to pick up this book. I am not ashamed or embarrassed that I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

On September 15, 1944, the U.S. First Marine Division landed on a small island in the Central Pacific called Peleliu as a prelude to the liberation of the Philippines. Among the first wave of Marines that hit the beach that day was 22-year-old George Peto.

Growing up on a farm in Ohio, George always preferred being outdoors and exploring. This made school a challenge, but his hunting, fishing and trapping skills helped put food on his family’s table. As a poor teenager living in a rough area, he got into regular brawls, and he found holding down a job hard because of his wanderlust. After working out West with the CCC, he decided that joining the Marines offered him the opportunity for adventure plus three square meals a day; so he and his brother joined the Corps in 1941, just a few months before Pearl Harbor.

Following boot camp and training, he was initially assigned to various guard units, until he was shipped out to the Pacific and assigned to the 1st Marines. His first combat experience was the landing at Finschhaven, followed by Cape Gloucester. Then as a Forward Observer, he went ashore in one of the lead amtracs at Peleliu and saw fierce fighting for a week before the regiment was relieved due to massive casualties. Six months later, his division became the immediate reserve for the initial landing on Okinawa. They encountered no resistance when they came ashore on D+1, but would go on to fight on Okinawa for over six months.

This is the wild and remarkable story of an "Old Breed" Marine, from his youth in the Great Depression, his training and combat in the Pacific, to his life after the war, told in his own words.

• I should start by saying I was very good friends with George Peto, the topic of this book, since the year 2000. I had the privilege of interviewing him one day, parts of which are used in this book. I can honestly say I never met anyone with a better memory, or someone who had so many amazing stories throughout his entire life. Co-author Pete Margaritas has done a fantastic job weaving together George's fascinating and at times laugh out loud funny tales of his childhood, the Great Depression, World War II experience and beyond.
  
  I had George come speak in my classroom (along with his best buddy Joe Dodge until 2015) from 2000-2016. Incidentally, the final picture in the book was taken in my school's gym while George entertained my 8th grade students. We did not know it at the time, but he would pass away two months later. To say Joe and George were popular with the kids (and staff) was an understatement! What they went through is beyond incredible. They do not make people like this anymore sadly. I often say that George was like a cat with nine lives, except when I read this book I am reminded with George it seemed closer to 900. The discomforts, close-calls, crazy antics, bizarre incidents and the endless combat time he experienced is unfathomable. George lived a life full of charm, keen instinct, good (and bad) luck, and experiences almost too many to believe were endured by one person. But they were.
  
  If you want to read about an amazing life told by a man who remembers most every detail of it, this is the one.
• This is an interesting first person account of the Second World War written by a man who was a Marine during the war.
  
  Some of the most interesting passages of the book were in the first few pages. This is the point where the man describes growing up in the 1920s and 30s in America. He explains the desperate poverty of the American depression and the problems of alcoholism within his family.
  
  He traveled the US trying to find work as a teenager, sometimes sleeping in the truck of cars, and eventually working the Civilian Conservation Corps until he finally was released after his two-year contract was complete.
  
  With nothing else going on in life, he eventually gets parental approval to join the Marines. He was only 18 years old but already lived a life. Since he was serving before the war started, he was called “Old Breed.”
  
  The rest of the book details two major campaigns he fought in as a forward observer to a mortar company. He delivered hard, fast, accurate fire directly upon the Japanese with devastating power.
  
  His descriptions of the battle at Peleliu and Okinawa are vivid and strong and give the feeling of how hard this experience was. How he managed to survive is something of a miracle.
  
  Over all, I enjoyed the book tremendously. I thought it was brilliant and I am glad I found it. There are not many first person accounts left to tell by this generation. This one was worth the wait.
  
  If you enjoyed this book then I would strongly recommend you read, “With the Old Breed,” by Eugene B. Sledge, “Helmet for my pillow,” by Richard Leckie and “Hell in the Pacific,” by Jim McEnery.
• Petty good read but the editing was terrible for a supposed "professional" editor. It is annoying and this "editor" should be fired. Many misspellings, wrong word choice, several EXACT repeats of paragraphs. George was an interesting guy and his editor should have done better by him.
• When I got to the epilogue, I hesitated. I knew before I read the book, that George had passed away and I felt like I was about to to lose a friend.
  
  One of his buddies, Clarence Keele, graduated from the high school where I teach and my father and his brothers went to school. Clarence was a classmate of my uncle, who was killed in an aircraft (F-80) collision over Okinawa in 1952 after 50 missions as bombardier in a B-29.
  
  I have read many WWII memoirs. This is among the best.
• I've read everything I can find on the battle of Peleliu. My fascination with this battle began when I read "With the Old Breed" in the 1980's when it was released and eventually led to me traveling to Peleliu in 2000 to see the place this battle was fought.
  It has been a very long time since I found a book about Peleliu I enjoyed so much that I read it cover to cover, including the prologue, PS and epilogue. I hated that it had to end.
  What an incredible gentleman, life, story and Marine.
• My wife and I have been to Peleliu, so I was thrilled about reading the remarkably detailed book about thhe island. We were SCUBA-diving in Palau and made the short trip to Peleliu, both on land and dove Peleliu Wall on a second trip. The land tour was in the company of one of the survivors of the battle and included a tour of the "Thousand Man Cave" and the war material and memorials on the island as well as the battle sites. The dive on the wall was one of our greatest and most thrilling dives. Very strong currents hitting the island from the vvery deep underwater canyons near the island. It is an am zing book
• Where did these men get the gumption to face death and leave it to fate as they went about defeating the enemy? Nothing exceptional about them but getting out of a foxhole or crawling forward as the bullets and shrapnel are wihizzing through the air to defend their country by killing the other guy. No wonder they don't feel like heroes or don't want to talk about what they encountered on the battlefield. But this account by George makes you want to say "Thank God for having had these ordinary men who overcame what politicians and generals asked them to handle and win!"

Something has been going wrong in American politics. The way we communicate to each other has become less respectful, more tribal. We seem to have less common ground. Worse, it just seems like we're not able to learn from each other, compromise, and cherry pick the best parts of opposing arguments.

The value of this book is it is not about our elites (politicians/media). It's about us. It's about how human beings with different values come to see reality. And we're just not seeing the same reality. Before you can constructfully do something about a problem in the world, you have to agree what the problem is.

Marietta and Barker have produced the first robust evidence on the polarization of American’s beliefs. But, the focus is on the individual, how one comes to have a belief about what is a fact. We naturally think that whatever we might *hope* to be true, that hope doesn't impact whether or not we determine it *is* true. We know that we have different values. But, we think that whatever our values, the truth is the truth, even if it’s inconvenient.

The terrifying argument of this book is that, we are compromised in our ability to see reality. Our brains are not truth gathering engines. And the authors elaborate the pathways in which we become biased toward or away from accepting something as true.

The book is pessimistic on whether we can correct these problems, although there is illuminating discussion of the mostly likely solutions (education, fact checking) and their effectiveness. My only criticism is that although you may be pessimistic on a societal level, this book can help your thinking if you take the challenge seriously.

Orwell said, “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.” This work shows why Orwell was right, but also arms you with the tools to take on that struggle. An individual can not remind themselves often enough of all the ways they can be blinded to accepting truth. This is important intellectually, but also personally.

My grandmother and grandfather never voted for the same Presidential candidate, but they loved each other for 56 years. After the last few elections, I'm afraid we can't even have a coffee with a friend who belongs to the "wrong" half of America. The best result of this book might be to help you go have that coffee and understand yourself and your loved ones better. You can realize we're all human and prone to error, and be a little easier on someone seeing a different fact about the world (and take on a little more healthy self-criticism!)."

• **An original MUST READ book to understand the American mind in the 21st Century**
  
  Something has been going wrong in American politics. The way we communicate to each other has become less respectful, more tribal. We seem to have less common ground. Worse, it just seems like we're not able to learn from each other, compromise, and cherry pick the best parts of opposing arguments.
  
  The value of this book is it is not about our elites (politicians/media). It's about us. It's about how human beings with different values come to see reality. And we're just not seeing the same reality. Before you can constructfully do something about a problem in the world, you have to agree what the problem is.
  
  Marietta and Barker have produced the first robust evidence on the polarization of American’s beliefs. But, the focus is on the individual, how one comes to have a belief about what is a fact. We naturally think that whatever we might *hope* to be true, that hope doesn't impact whether or not we determine it *is* true. We know that we have different values. But, we think that whatever our values, the truth is the truth, even if it’s inconvenient.

This may be a small book (certainly smaller and more concise than his similar and later work Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life: How to Finally, Really Grow Up) but it covers the topic so well. It seems especially recommendable to people interested in depth psychology and finding a map to navigate this critical and challenging passage.

What I especially enjoy about Hollis is the literate sensibility he brings to his writing (often utilizing appropriate references from literature both old and modern), combined with his wise and welcoming experience of being human (every stage and experience has its place and value.... It's all good when we find it's meaning, and the struggle and suffering make it all the more recognizable and significant. The real problem is our modern culture is lacking in clear guidelines, maps and support from wise elders.... The challenging part is it's up to us here and now to create these essential functions.)

This book covers an overview of the four stages/identities humans experience in a complete life (childhood and adolescence, which lead to the second adulthood beginning at midlife, leading to acceptance of mortality in old age). It clearly points out how the first half is about establishing our egos, and fitting in to expectations, while the second is about finding our individual voice and real meaning (the resolutions of often long buried questions). As Hollis says, "if we are fortunate to suffer enough, we are stunned into a reluctant consciousness and the questions return to us again." (Pg 19) I could quote so much more to give a taste of his gentle wisdom, but I will share just one more.

"During the Middle Passage, the insurgence of the shadow is part of a corrective effort made by the Self to bring the personality back into balance. The key to integration of the shadow, the unlived life, is to understand that it's demands emanate from the Self, which wishes neither further repression nor unlicensed acting out. The integration of the shadow requires that we live responsibly in society but also more honestly with ourselves. We learn through the deflation of the persona world that we have lived provisionally; the integration of inner truths, joyful or unpleasant, is necessary to bring new life and restoration of purpose." (pg. 44)

• The eruptions that occur for most of us in midlife are troubling and bewildering loss of an established identity, depression, boredom, anxiety, perhaps even addiction, and the overwhelming feeling that something is dying and something else needs to be reborn. For some these seismic shifts break out in the stereotypical displays of the midlife crisis (jettisoning relationships and careers, for example) while others stew in quiet desperation and perhaps seek therapy or simply hope the disturbing rumblings will pass. In the author's words, "Anyone in midlife has witnessed the collapsing of projections, of hopes and expectations, and has experienced the limitations of talent, intelligence, and, often, of courage itself."
  
  James Hollis, a Jungian therapist with decades of experience as an analyst and teacher, has written this remarkable book which is the best I have seen at elucidating what the midlife passage means and the creative response it demands.
  
  Approaching the topic from the rich, poetic, and mystical perspective of depth psychology, Hollis maintains that our second lives call for nothing less than a renegotiation with the universe. In the first part of life, the ego is in charge and has projected unrealistic demands upon people, jobs, institutions and other aspects of the outer world. In the second half of life, Hollis maintains that these projections must be withdrawn and that we must undergo a new, inner journey based on what the soul demands. While this may at first sound theoretical and impractical, in fact Hollis describes aspects of what such an odyssey would entail as it relates to relationships, vocation, and other aspects of living. Hollis says that we already have everything we need to make this journey, however fraught with fear it can be. It's already inside us. I think you will come away convinced.
  
  At only 117 pages, concentrated and learned--but not pedantic--almost every paragraph has a sentence that can be pondered, underlined, and returned to. I expect to do this many times.
  
  As frightening as the midlife passage can be, Hollis gives us hope. He writes, "We are in the sea-surge of the soul, along with many others to be sure, but needing to swim under our own power. The truth is simply that what we must know will come from within. If we can align our lives with that truth, no matter how difficult the abrasions of the world, we will feel healing, hope, and new life."
  
  If you have entered the dark wood of midlife--as Dante referred to it--you will find this book to be an immensely rewarding companion that offers not a way out, but a description of a path through that will be uniquely your own.
