Naomi Novik's stunning series of novels follow the global adventures of Captain William Laurence and his fighting dragon, Temeraire, as they are thrown together to fight for Britain during the turbulent time of the Napoleonic Wars.

Convicted of treason and stripped of rank and standing, Temeraire and Lawrence are transported to the prison colony at New South Wales. With them travel three dragon eggs destined to be handed over to second-rate officers willing to accept so remote an assignment - including one former acquaintance, Captain Rankin, whose cruelty once cost a dragon its life.

They arrive at a young Australian colony in turmoil after the overthrow of the military governor, William Bligh - formerly Captain Bligh, late of HMS Bounty. Eager to escape the political quagmire, Laurence and Temeraire accept a mission to pioneer a route through the forbidding Blue Mountains and into the interior of Australia. But when one of the dragon eggs is stolen, the surveying expedition becomes a desperate race to recover it before the dragonet hatches - a race that leads to a shocking discovery and a dangerous new obstacle in the global war between Britain and France.

"Having to say that the characters developed is quite misleading. This is the 6th book and so we have a deep understanding of the Lorans and Temeraire and it seems their development as characters came to a still.

True, they act more with passion and from their hearts, but I think this was my least favorite book of the series so far.
The story it self in Australia is a little too obvious, the whole conflict with china was pretty straight forward and I kind of guessed the whole thing from the first line.

I have a feeling I am reading the next book only in order to finish this series at last."

Tongues of Serpents The Temeraire Series Book 6 Audible Audio Edition Naomi Novik Simon Vance HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books Reviews

  • I have thoroughly enjoyed the first few installments of this series, and have looked forward to each book going on and on when I felt it had already dealt out as much adventure as any book had a right to do. Black Powder War in particular was one that I particularly relished, as I kept waiting for it to wrap up and to get on to the next book, but it just kept taking one great turn after another. It was a little surprising to have so many books in a row without a slump.

But a slump had to come eventually. This book was disappointing if only for the fact that it felt half-finished. It was shorter than the others, and had no real twists to it; about the time one would normally come, toward the end when their long and monotonous journey comes to an end, there was a quick sort of climax that was rather unsatisfying that came to a close very quickly.

I was sad to see Laurence and Temeraire avoid the politics of the rebellion against the governor of Australia. I think there was the potential for Temeraire to explore a whole new avenue of radical ideas entirely outside the stifling British atmosphere, but they ditched that to go on a very straightforward and boring flight across the desert. Even then, there was Kulingule to wonder about, but even then he ended up just turning out to be a heavy weight. For a moment I wondered if he might end up with some ability not unlike the Divine Wind, with the way his body sagged and filled with air. But again, it was like the author was rushed and had no time to delve into that potential mystery.

I wonder if a part of my disappointment with this book lies in the fact that I read this one, whereas I listened to the audiobooks of most of the previous iterations. Simon Vance has the perfect voice for this series, and I think I might go back to listening to the rest. And I will continue through the series. I think that Naomi Novik is a wonderfully talented author and I have found myself enthralled with this series as a whole, but I am left with the impression that this book did not get the full attention it deserved. After reading five books in a row that were truly splendid, one book can’t change my opinion of he author’s talent.

Here’s hoping that the next installment has more of the spirit of the prior books. I’m in for the long haul, and flush with the hope that the next book will return Laurence and Temeraire to their place as two of the most interesting and charming characters I’ve come across in a while.
  • I have been following the Temeraire series after purchasing the 3 book collection In the Service of the King on a whim. I enjoyed the previous installments (some more than others) but knew going into this one this isn't fine art just passable Pop-fiction and indeed it has been enjoyable up till now. This installment is BORING, the plot is essentially a framing device. It starts in the british penal colony of Australia in the port town of Sydney which was kind of bland in execution even the fist fight was just blah. The middle part and the vast majority of the book consists of wasteland-wandering in the outback where descriptions of cooking kangaroo and Temeraire's increasing effeminacy (seems just too worried about Laurence's clothes, in fact all of the dragons including the new ones just seemed overly concerned about their captains' status and clothes while simultaneously starving and dying of exhaustion) abound, and the latter third part which is the most interesting part of the book save for the non-ending probably intended as a cliff-hanger. It wasn't it just sucked. The endless and ultimately pointless wandering reminded me of almost the exact same scene in another dreadful book, Eragon. This book just seemed not only a "money-grab" or a way to write off an Australian weekend for the author but a lazy introduce-new-characters-for-the-next-slow-moving-installment. This book could've been condensed greatly with more action and adventure (the lame bunyip-dragon-snakes did not add anything) in it mayhap even some character development (it was that boring) as Temeraire and Laurence seem hardly changed from the last book!
I actually advance-ordered this, needless to say I'll wait awhile for a mass of reviews to pile up before I even contemplate buying the next one.
