This is an easy book to enjoy in small gulps as you make way across the Great Lake states with Chris (and you don't even have to spend long days on a bicycle to do it!). • What a beautiful way to see the country. In such admiration of Chris’s journey. Conversations With Us was such an enjoyable read. I really loved getting to know another part of our amazing country and am looking forward to the next journey.
• Chris has been bicycling all around the country having honest conversations with folks from all walks of life, trying to figure out what binds us together and getting insights into our complicated American family. This book covers his Great Lakes States tour, covering travels in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York (with a brief stop over the border in Canada for some contrast). It is a great and fun read and he has insightful interviews with a former Miss America pageant winner, steel and automobile union workers, farmers, an Amish man, and kids struggling to stay in school, among many others.
  What strikes me most about his discussions is the empathy with which he approaches each interview. In each case, he lets the subject tell their story and views without judgment, maintaining their personal dignity. But that doesn’t mean that he isn’t willing to challenge their ideas directly with them to achieve a deeper discussion and get at underlying beliefs and values. The author brings a really good perspective to consider how to have true meaningful discussions between people, not hiding yourself, but also embracing the other. I am so excited to see this project develop and for the future books to come.
